Hospitality
Hospitality - the practice of welcoming strangers - has long been a central Christian value. At the Chaplaincy, it is central to our ministry of presence. Every day, we provide coffee, tea and light snacks to anyone who enters our doors. Hospitality is not only provided by the Chaplain and church volunteers; members of the community provide hospitality to each other. Neighbours helping neighbours; this is a central part of hospitality at the Chaplaincy.
The Chaplaincy offers a place of safety, acceptance and nurture of all. The dignity and worth of each person is honoured and their individual gifts are celebrated.
The History of Hospitality at the Chaplaincy
"The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble." Psalm 9:9
For many years, hospitality has been provided in the main space of the Chaplaincy. Since 1997, hospitality has been provided in two main ways: through our Drop-Ins and the Saturday Night Community Dinners.
Chaplain's Open Door Drop-In
Four mornings a week we host a drop-in for all members of the community. A light snack is available, as well as a friendly, warm reception for everyone who comes by.
Time: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 10 am - 12 noon.
Saturday Night Out Community Dinners
One the third Saturday of each month, a free community dinner is provided by one of our supporting churches. Community members work alongside church volunteers to provide a delicious hot meal to the community. It is held next door in the Bellevue Community Centre at 1475 Caldwell Avenue.
Time: Third Saturday of the month, 5 pm - 7 pm.
Annual Christmas Dinner
Every year early in December, all of the supporting churches get together and put on a Christmas dinner for the community. This past year we served more than 200 dinners, with three seatings and take-out. 11 turkeys were carved and many pounds of potatoes were cooked! Church volunteers and community members alike worked from 10 am until 8 pm to offer this traditional hospitality to our diverse community. Join us next year!
Time: Early December.
